PHASE #2 - How to pick your perfect RV/What to look for
- Now that you know your budget, new or used RV, and have selected 3 of your top floorplans, go see those RV’s at shows or dealers lots. 2 good sources for this- the manufacturer(s) of choice websites and use the locate dealer tab. Another is to “google” RV shows near me to see the RV’s that works he’s for you.
- Have at least 2 financing options secured if you can before you go. Start with your bank or credit Union for “pre-approval amounts.” You can also reach out to the big lenders such as BOA, BOW, etc.
- If you find a RV that works well for you at a show or at a private party sale, never, ever be pressured into buying unless you’re ready. Do not let your emotions get the best of you. Shows sometimes have good specials, but you can almost always get the “show price” after the show.
- Have a list of questions ready for the seller or salesperson. Here are some good questions to ask: What’s the Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC) so that you know how many people and items you can take with you safely?; what can I expect for maintenance cost as a rough estimate?; what exactly do the warranties cover?; do I have access to you after I buy if I need help?
- Make sure you know weight limits on all overhead beds and tank sizes.
- If you’re paying with cash, don’t tell dealers that you are paying with case up front. Let them know that you’re exploring all options.
- Check to see if the RV title is clean and if it is in hand.
- Use a tape measure for storage dimensions to see if there’s enough for you. Also check doorway sizes to make sure you can get through with a laundry basket or groceries.
- If you’re a pet owner, see what if’s like from their perspective and how safe it will be for them even if that requires you to get on all fours!
- Be sure to get in the RV when the slides are in to see if you can access bathroom or fridge even if partially without having to put the slides out.
